New Tech Tracker of British Internet usage by IPSOS Mori

A "must use" if you present to colleagues or clients explaining the adoption of digital media

IPSOS Mori has released their 'Tech Tracker Survey for first Q2013' which has some great insights into Internet Usage - 50% of British Adults access social networks, 16% using Twitter and 17% have used Google+.

Respondents were asked questions about how, when and where they use social networking sites and the internet generally. Over 1,023 adults from Great Britain, aged 15 year and older (Some statistics shown are weighted to a national representative profile). Findings from the report have been presented across key sections: Internet Usage, Social Networking, Home use, Smartphones and Tablets,  Music, Games, TV and Movies and the consumption of online movies.

We will highlight the different parts of the research in this post, but there are many other "data points" in the full report.

  • 1.Internet Usage and online activities

77% of  those interviewed use the internet for email and this has continued to rise year-on-year. Following this, the most popular activity is search for personal interests and to research products.

  • 2. Social platform trends

Respondents use different social platforms include Twitter, LinkedIn, Youtube and Google*. This one is useful since it shows use of Google+ is above Twitter. Although visiting Google+ is very different from active use. Still, it's a way of emphasising the importance of Google+ if talking to colleagues or clients.

The findings also highlighted that 'In contrast to Facebook, Google+ has captured more users aged 15-24 and 35-44  than any other age group. Smartphone penetration is now on par with other social networks!'.

  • 3. Smartphone ownership and Tablets

There has been a growth in tablets usage, from 9% up to 25% over the quarter

Increase since 2011, up to 53% of respondents owning a smartphone and the younger males prefer the Iphone and Android.
