Chart of the day: How long do you spend on social media networks each day?

This chart looks at average daily time spent online and what we are actually doing with that time. It was reported that the most common reasons for using social networks are to “fill up spare time”.  Users are now spending around 2 hours per day on social networks and messaging, that adds up to 5 years and 4 months spent over an average lifetime. This figure is up 15 minutes from 2012. It's perhaps no surprise as our infographic of the social media activity every minute shows. The increase we see here will be due to how social media platforms themselves are evolving their tools and options to further attract and engage new audiences. As they evolve the more time we will spend there. What does this mean for marketers? Start researching when your followers are most…

Facebook launches new tools to make group admins lives a little easier

Facebook has rolled out some great new tools for group admins that will help them manage their groups more effectively. The aim of rolling out theses changes are to help group admins and moderators to save time and increase the amount of meaningful content to ensure the groups are adding value for Facebooks users. Mark Zuckerberg  described his vision of Facebook groups as: There is a real opportunity to connect more of us with groups that will be meaningful social infrastructure in our lives. More than one billion people are active members of Facebook groups. If we can improve our suggestions and help connect one billion people with meaningful communities, that can strengthen our social fabric. At the Facebook Communities Summit in Chicago, it was announced to some of the top group admins of Facebook that they are looking to provide…

New research from the DMA shows that only 48% of marketers agree that social media gives them any return on investment.

A report from the DMA on social media's place in marketing reveals some very interesting trends, but not all of them are positive. Although the vast majority (77%) of marketers are using at least one social network to promote their brand, that doesn't necessarily mean they are getting the most out of social or generating significant ROI from it. The research asked some 111 marketers from a mix of large B2B and B2C companies questions regarding their use of social media. We have also just undertaken our own research in 2017 with a much larger sample size (609) and found a big divide in how marketers view the effectiveness of social media marketing.

Spotlight story: Twitter has a new look

The most talked about change in social media this week has been Twitter's new look. As many have already seen Twitter has redesigned their layout, introduced some new features and updated old ones. You will now see a rounded profile photo, more intuitive icons, a new side navigation menu and articles and websites opening in Safari’s viewer. So make sure you adapt your profile photo to fit in the new circle shape. It is clear Twitter have listened to their user's feedback and made changes according to this. Even though Twitter received some backlash from this update its good to see a social media platform adapting to their user's needs. Read our full…

Twitter introduce rounded profile photos, live engagement updates and much more.

You may have noticed last week Twitter updated its look and redesigned some of its key features. Most of the changes are mainly aesthetic but have been applied to make Twitter look consistent across both IOS and the Andriod app. Twitter announced the redesign last week quoting: 'We're refreshing our product too and making it feel lighter, faster, and easier to use. We listened closely and kept what you love. And for the things you didn’t, we took a new approach to fix and make better.'

What's changed?

The most obvious feature that Twitter has changed is switching from square profile photos to rounded images. Although not everyone has taken too kindly to the new profile icons. Additionally, the update has changed the look of interaction buttons on tweets, for…

Chart of the day: Staying in touch with friends is the main reason behind social media use

We all use social media but why do we use it? A recent report interviewed a range of social media users and explored what keeps them coming back to social networks. The study reported that 42% use social media to keep in touch with what their friends are doing. Conversely, it is becoming used less to share their own photos or opinions, with only 33% doing so. Therefore what we can see is that many social media users are coming to view social networks as a passive form of networking. Users are just looking to consume content rather than sharing their own personal lives. What does this mean for marketing? It is good news that users are open to engaging with content, rather than just putting out their own. However, if users are uploading less of their personal content, this…

Chart of the Day: Snapchat's impressive growth is mostly confined to North America

Snapchat's explosive growth and popularity among 'Gen Z' means many marketers have started to see it as the future of social media. But perhaps this hype is only really relevant for those focused on the US market. Although Snapchat is growing in other areas, the level of penetration is far lower. Snapchat's ad products are also clearly less used outside of the US, in part because of the lack of penetration. This can be inferred from the extremely low revenue per user in all markets other than North America. Instagram to Launch New 'Paid Partnership Tag' for sponsored content

Instagram are launching a new feature for influencers. This feature described as the 'paid partnership' tag is aiming to make it clear to consumers which posts are sponsored and which are not. Allowing influencers and brands to tag the partners who have paid to be featured in the posts in some way. The tag will clearly mark the image as paid and it will also do the same on stories. It has also been reported that influencers using the tag will be able to track insights allowing both parties view its metrics to track how the content is performing. The paid partnership tag is currently only been rolled out to a select few influencers, brands and businesses but we may see a wider roll-out in the coming months. This new feature is a great move on Instagrams behalf…
