Chart of the Day: Facebook's new corrected video view figures show it was never ahead of YouTube on video

Back in 2014, we saw loads of headlines saying 'Facebook is now beating YouTube in video views'. Then came the string of correcting articles pointing out that Facebook was only winning because it counts 3 seconds of viewing as a view, whilst YouTube counts 30 seconds as a view. So clearly it was like comparing apples and oranges, but Facebook still had more apples than YouTube had oranges. Or so we thought. In late 2016 the news broke that thanks to a bug in its video view tracking code, Facebook had been accidentally overstating the length of video views on its platform by 80%. Now new viewing data from Nielsen has shown that since Facebook fixed the error causing it to wrongly inflate viewing counts, the true viewing figures for Facebook's video views are…

How to make the most out of your company's data

Today’s corporate agendas revolve around the staggering amount of data available and the advanced analytics needed to gather, interpret and use such data. When it comes to Big Data and Advanced Analytics, things can get really tricky for a company not making the best of them. A recent McKinsey report shows that businesses which are not able to leverage Big Data and which fail to achieve performing data management also witness an average of 14% in lost revenues per year. Surprisingly, oil companies, life sciences, and consumer goods make the top three industries where big data and advanced analytics are poorly managed, thus leading to financial losses. As opposed to the McKinsey report, a study coming from MIT and Harvard Business School shows that companies focusing on big data management and advanced analysis witness an increase in revenue of up to 6%…

Chart of the Day: 42% of marketers are planning on increasing the amount of time they dedicate to Pinterest

This week, Pinterest have announced the addition of ad groups to their ad platform for marketers to better organise their sponsored pins. For anyone familiar with Google Adwords or Facebook Advertising it always felt strange that Pinterest didn't have the ability to arrange their campaign into ad groups. This development shows how Pinterest is trying to capitalise on the interest in the network from marketers by having familiar features. A lower bar to entry for a marketer to get up and running quickly will ensure that they at least give the platform a fair chance to prove its worth. This announcement is interesting when you consider the charts below from the Social media marketing report from Social Media Examiner. The report showed that there is an eagerness from marketers for the platform with…

It is estimated that during 2016, total retail travel sales across the globe will reach $22.049 trillion, up 6.0% from the previous year. According to Statista, by 2019, the online travel industry is forecasted to grow to 762 billion U.S. dollars. Today, the majority of people use different websites during the travel purchase journey, either to find information about a destination, read reviews or to book travel online. August 2016 research published by the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) found that 76% of UK internet users had booked holidays digitally in the past 12 months. In the US, Emarketer estimates that 52% of travel bookers use online platforms to make their bookings. Video already makes up 70% of global internet traffic, but this is set to increase still further.

To state the obvious, video is already an extremely popular content medium.  But far from plateauing, online video it set to continue its rapid growth. By 2020 it's set to reach an overwhelming 80% share of all global internet traffic. This trend is propelled by two key factors. Firstly there is the growing popularity of on-demand video. Then there is the increasing popularity of video-based social media. This doesn't just mean YouTube. Facebook's push of live video as well as uploaded video, and Snapchat's and Instagram popularity (both of which now involve video) mean increasing views of video content from social platforms. Marketers need to take advantage these trends, and utilise video- whether for marketing or advertising. Exploiting the incredible prominence Facebook is currently giving live video at the moment looks like a promising tactic at the moment…

Dirty data leads to costly mistakes. Here's how to prevent them

A co-worker once told me the sort of horror story that causes marketers to wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night. In a previous position at a large technology company, he and his team generated numerous leads through conferences and trade shows. The field marketing managers would send the leads to their marketing operations team via CSV files, and the operations team would use the information to follow up with these leads. The data came in varied formats and was not always clean or easily segmented. In one unfortunate case, the marketing operations team mistakenly uploaded a file containing 500 software industry leads under the service provider category in their system. The leads were routed into the service provider channel, and all 500 of them received a service provider newsletter rather than a software email. Needless to…
