Instagram hashtags just got interesting
Instagram now allows you to follow a hashtag, the same way you would follow an account. Instagram’s algorithms will then pick and choose some of the highlights from that collection and surface them in your main feed.
Techcrunch reported that eventually, 'hashtag following could give the app more powerful ad targeting data and an opportunity to show more interstitial ads between Stories, but the company says it’s not doing either right now'.

Instagram lets you archive stories
Instagram announced that stories will be automatically save to your archive when they expire. According to Instagram, this makes it easy for you to revisit your favorite moments later on or bring them back to life in a highlight. Only you can see your archived stories, and you can choose to turn off auto-archiving at any time in your profile settings. This has been rolled out globally.

Users can now request to join a live stream that they’re watching and, if accepted, can start broadcasting live as the host’s guest. Instagram launched the feature this week. To access this simply tap the “Request” button in the comments section. You’ll see a confirmation that your friend has accepted your request, and you will automatically join the live stream.

Welcome to our weekly summary of what's happened in social media this week. We highlight the top stories to help you stay up to date with social media, here is what caught our attention this week.
Twitter announced back in September that they would be expanding beyond its 140-character limit. This was finally rolled out to all user this week. This will be for select languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, and French, to allow users to share their thoughts without running out of room in the tweet. They will be testing this feature out on a small group of verified accounts, to begin with.
Their reasoning for expanding the character count was because, for those tweeting in some languages such as Japanese, Korean or Chinese, they require fewer characters than tweets in English or Spanish.
